The Luck Razor

Increase your luck surface area!

TEACH

The Luck Razor

I have been researching the topic of luck and came across an awesome framework that I learned from SahilBloom's newsletter so thought I'd touch on the subject of luck.

He speaks about advice that he would give to young entrepreneurs today.

One of his points of advice was to show up early and stay late in any event.

Why?!

Enter...

The Luck Razor.

By showing up early and staying late, you are effectively increasing your "luck surface area".

If you've ever arrived at an event or meeting early, you may have noticed that the most interesting conversation always comes up. This often also happens if you stay after the meeting or event has finished.

I've noticed this with my own podcast. Before I start recording and after the podcast is finished, this is where the true magic happens.

In the beginning, they start to share a bit about themselves that is not related to the podcast topic, and after, you learn even more from them as you have built trust through communication.

This often leads to surprising opportunities for collaboration and it's great for idea generation, which in turn, creates more opportunities.

It's worth noting that this is much harder to do in an online or hybrid setting. It is best to seek out these luck-expanding situations and find in-person interactions. Being in the room pays off remarkably!

I took a lot from this going forward. By putting in just that little bit of extra effort, it increases your chances of getting lucky.

If luck is where preparation meets opportunity, then why not spend a little bit of extra time in that space?

INSIGHTS

Talent Effort or Luck

Really interesting article on luck by Tomas Chamorro-Premuzic.

Here is a quick summary of what you will read:

  • The article looks at how much talent, effort, and luck matter for career success.

  • Research shows that luck plays the biggest role, followed by talent, and then effort.

  • Intelligence and emotional smarts help with about 24% of success.

  • Effort, like working hard, adds about 9%.

  • The rest of success is due to luck, including things like where you’re born, your family background, and other factors you can’t control.

He says that “Success = Talent + Luck” but “Great Success = A little More Talent + A Lot of Luck”

Tomas concludes the article by saying, “In other words, the more you control something, the less it matters”.

In other words, luck is a major factor in peoples success, and talent and effort play less of a part in how lucky you are.

I am a big believer that you create your own luck. I believe you put yourself in positions which can give you more opportunities to get lucky, but you have to take them.

This is very similar to the surfer mentality. More to come on this soon over the coming weeks so stay tuned!

Do you think Tomas is right? Feel free to respond to this email. I’d be happy to exchange thoughts.

Motivation

What really matters?

I love this tweet by Jack Altman from Shaan Puri’s weekly tweets.

When you zoom out in life, what actually matters are family, health and doing something you love everyday. “Everything else is accouterments”.

This tweet exemplifies how we get so caught up on the things that don’t truly matter.

Something to think about if you don’t feel truly content with your life at the moment. It might be time to reassess one of these areas in your life.

EXPLORE

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Chamber

A new concept I have been exploring is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy(HBOT).

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is a medical treatment where patients breathe pure oxygen (93%) in a pressurized chamber. This boosts oxygen levels in the blood, helping to heal wounds, fight infections, and improve recovery from various conditions.

Basically, blood is pumped around your body through your cardiovascular system. This contains 41% Red Blood Cells, 55% Plasma, 4% white blood cells.

When you are in a pressurized environment and breathe 93% oxygen at the same time, the oxygen changes from a gas to a liquid.

When you breathe normally, your red blood cells are full of oxygen however breathing in a hyperbaric oxygen chamber allows your body to take in more oxygen as it dissolves directly into your plasma as a liquid state.

Fresh oxygenated plasma is pumped to the areas of your body where oxygen is depleted which accelerates healing of injuries and infection as well as reduces swelling and inflammation.

This helps you get the necessary blood flow to areas that are lacking circulation.

This is why it is so effective at healing.

Here are the main benefits:

  • Promotes faster wound healing

  • Reduces swelling and inflammation

  • Enhances recovery from injuries

  • Boosts oxygen delivery to damaged tissues

  • Helps fight certain infections

  • Supports healing after surgeries

  • Enhances tissue repair

I’ve only done it twice and the results have been mixed so I will update you once my protocol is finished.

Feel free to share this if you gained any value from it. Feedback is also welcome.
