The Two Selves Theory

The Two Shelves Theory

You’ve heard it before.

But have you felt it?

You walk into the grocery store, stomach growling, just planning to grab “a few things.”

But 20 minutes later, your cart is stacked with frozen pizzas, three kinds of chips, a suspicious amount of cookies, and that new sugary cereal you definitely don’t need.

You know what healthy you wanted, but hungry you won.

This is the Two Selves Theory in action.

There’s the “Present You”, impulsive, craving comfort, living for the moment.

And then there’s “Future You” the one who wants to feel better, do better, be better.

The catch? They almost never want the same thing in the moment.

We’re all living with the tension between these two selves.

Present You wants to binge-watch, scroll, and indulge. Future You wants clarity, health, progress, peace.

But here’s the trick, if you start thinking from your future self's perspective, your decisions get smarter, almost instantly.

Easier said than done though!

Try this:
+Before making a decision, pause and ask: What would Future Me thank me for?
+Do a "mental time travel" exercise, picture yourself tomorrow, next week, or a year from now. What choice will they be proud you made?
+Even better: set your environment up for your “Future Self”. Don’t bring the junk home in the first place. Put your exercise clothes out the night before.

You don’t need to be perfect, but remember: every cookie in the cart is a vote for who you’re becoming.

So… next time you're hungry, maybe shop for who you want to be and not for what you want now!

INSIGHTS

The World Expert On Love

This episode instantly made it into my “Best Podcasts” folder.

It’s not just insightful, it’s the kind of conversation that shifts how you see yourself and your relationships.

World-renowned evolutionary anthropologist Dr. Anna Machin joins Steven Bartlett on The Diary of a CEO to unpack the deep (and often surprising) science behind love, connection, fatherhood, attachment, and why we sometimes fall for people who hurt us.

There are so many lightbulb moments in this one, from understanding how parenting shapes who we become, to how love affects the brain like a drug, to why our attachment styles aren’t destiny, they’re adaptable.

If you’ve ever wanted to understand the “why” behind your patterns in love or family, this one’s gold.

Key Takeaways

  • Cheating mimics drug addiction in the brain

  • Monogamy is more flexible than we’ve been told

  • Your first 1,000 days shape your attachment for life

  • Fatherhood changes the male brain, specially through physical touch

  • Modern dating apps overload us with choices biology never evolved for

  • Attachment styles can change, you’re not stuck

  • Relationships shape longevity more than any diet or workout

Seriously, this one’s a gem. You’ll want to take notes. Or listen twice.

MOTIVATION

Add Life To Your Days

You can’t add days to your life, but you can add life to your days.

Anonymous

More days won’t make it better.

More life will.

Book the trip. Make the call. Take the risk.

The No-List

The No List

This week, I made a to-do list… and then I stumbled across something better: a No-List.

Here’s the deal, every time I’ve felt overwhelmed, it’s rarely because I have too little to do.

It’s because I’ve said yes to too much.

So I flipped the script.

Right underneath my goals for the week, I wrote a list of things I’m not doing.
+ No checking emails after 8pm
+ No saying yes to last-minute meetings
+ No mindless Instagram scrolls
+ No fixing things that aren’t mine to fix

It is wildly freeing.

Think of the No-List as a boundary blueprint.

It protects your time, your energy, and your priorities.

Because productivity isn’t just about what you do, it’s about what you don’t.

Try making your own this week.

One or two things you’re hitting pause on.

Hit that reply button and let me know if this was useful for you!
