The Rule of Three

The Rule of Three
The new year is here!
It’s like opening a blank notebook. You’ve got 365 fresh pages to fill. But instead of cramming it full of everything at once, why not start smart?
Enter The Rule of Three, a brilliant hack from productivity expert J.D. Meier that’s perfect for making 2025 your most focused and successful year yet.
What’s the Rule of Three?
Think of the Rule of Three as your personal GPS for productivity. Instead of trying to conquer the world in one day, break it down into smaller, more manageable steps.
It’s simple: Focus on just three things at a time. Instead of overwhelming yourself with a million goals and tasks, you narrow it down to:
3 big goals for the year
3 smaller goals each month
3 goals each week
3 daily priorities
This strategy helps you avoid burnout, stay consistent, and actually see progress.
How It Works
Dream Big for the Year: Think about what you really want to achieve in 2025. Keep it to 3 major goals (e.g., “Get fit, save money, start a passion project”).
Break It Down for the Month: For each yearly goal, set 3 mini-goals you can tackle in January (e.g., “Run 10 miles, stick to a budget, brainstorm ideas for my project”).
Take Action Daily: Every morning, write down 3 key tasks that align with your goals (e.g., “Go for a jog, pack lunch to save money, research my project idea”).
Celebrate Wins: At the end of the day, check off what you’ve done and celebrate even the small victories.
The Rule of Three Table Breakdown
Focus | Rule of Three | |
|---|---|---|
Year | Big Yearly Dream | 3 Wins for the Year |
Month | Monthly Theme | 3 Wins for the Month |
Week | Weekly Goals | 3 Wins for the Week |
Day | Daily Wins | 3 Wins for the Day |
Example: Financial Goal
Year Goal: Save $5,000.
January Goal: Save $500 this month.
Weekly Goal: Cut back on eating out.
Today’s Task: Make coffee at home instead of buying it.

Why It’s So Powerful
A new year often feels like a fresh start, but it can also come with the pressure to do all the things. The Rule of 3 works wonders because of how our brains process information.
Our brains are wired to handle and retain just a few chunks of information at a time, around three is optimal. When you focus on three main tasks or goals, it reduces mental overload and improves your ability to stay on track.
It’s not about doing everything at once, it’s about doing the right things consistently.
When you look back at the end of 2025, those small, focused steps will add up to massive wins.
Remember, small things become big things.
So, what are your 3 big goals for the year?

Never Split the Difference

Picture from Stacked
Never Split the Difference by Chris Voss is a highly acclaimed book on negotiation tactics, written by a former FBI hostage negotiator.
In the book, Voss shares real-world strategies and techniques he used during high-stakes negotiations and adapts them for everyday use, whether in business, personal life, or professional settings.
Some of the key techniques he outlines include:
Mirroring: Repeating the last few words the other person says to create rapport and encourage them to reveal more.
Tactical Empathy: Understanding the other party’s perspective and emotions to influence them without manipulation.
Accusation Audit: Addressing any potential concerns or objections before the other person brings them up.
The “7-38-55 Rule”: The idea that only 7% of communication is based on the words used, with 38% coming from tone of voice and 55% from body language.
I have just started the book and finished the mirroring technique. It is mind-blowing how these techniques are used on us everyday and we are completely unaware of it happening.
The book is fascinating. Highly recommend.
MOTIVATION
Can or Can’t
Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t, you’re right.
Read that again. Let that sink in.
This quote is a powerful reminder that our mindset shapes everything. If you believe you can do something, you’ll find a way to make it happen, no matter the obstacles.
If you believe you can’t, you’re already setting yourself up for failure.

Plastic Credits

Plastic Credits
Plastic credits might just be the next big thing in the world of sustainability, like cryptocurrency, but for the environment!
Here's the idea: Just like carbon credits help offset carbon emissions, plastic credits allow businesses to pay for projects that reduce plastic waste in the environment.
Companies like Amplivo help businesses offset their plastic footprint by connecting them with verified recycling and waste management projects.
Through the purchase of plastic credits, businesses support efforts like ocean cleanups and improved recycling systems, ensuring measurable environmental impact.
Why does this matter?
Well, plastic pollution is a huge problem, and while recycling is part of the solution, plastic credits offer a way for businesses to do more.
This could become a major trend, where people and companies invest in the future of a cleaner planet.
Think of it like investing in sustainability, just like buying Bitcoin, but for the planet’s health!
Something to consider looking into going for the new year.
Ambitious Question
If I could only focus on one thing this year, what would it be and why?
In case you missed last week's newsletter, I wrote about:
TEACH: The Hedonic Treadmill explains why happiness fades after achieving something. Focus on gratitude, meaningful relationships, and savoring the present moment to step off the cycle.
INSIGHTS: Asking better questions unlocks clarity and new possibilities. This holiday season, replace common questions with thoughtful ones to deepen connections.
MOTIVATION: "Life is what happens when you're busy making other plans." True joy lies in the simple, unexpected moments shared with loved ones.
